J.S. & S. Silver Plate Salver
We have had for a while a nice salver which until recently we knew little about and was a bit of a conundrum. The salver has a brassy patina to it but in the centre of the base it bears a makers mark (J.S.& S) ...plus three other marks which at first glance appear to be silver hallmarks. The brassy patina suggests that the piece has once been silver plated and unfortunatly due to the wrong type of cleaning the silver has worn off. Many plated items of this period have ended up being rubbed back to the base metal which makes complete silver plated items more scarce.
Researching the makers' mark brought with it some interesting information. J.S, & S stands for John Sherwood and Sons, a company based in Birmingham between 1858 and 1913. This version of the mark was used between 1865 and 1913 and the mark next to it represents a beaver which was also used as a trade mark by this company. The crown mark was used by the Birmingham Assay Office and normally appears on Stirling silver items. The last mark is a Gothic letter C used in this form as a date letter on Birmingham silver produced 1826-27 which predates this piece. Other pieces from the same maker have had different Gothic letters from the same hallmark cylce used between 1824 and 1849. This suggests that J.S. & S may have been using these to date their products but there is no evidence to show when this began or ended.
All this adds up to a set of marks which mimic those which were required on Sterling silver but for which there were no legal guidelines for silver plate. Confusing now and was seen as an attempt to deceive at the time!

did he make butter knifes
ReplyDeleteHi Charlotte,
DeleteYes this maker, as with many at the time, did produce many different items in silver plate and J Sherwood also made some items in silver. Despite not being especially known for knives they would naturally have had butter knives amongst their products as they were much in use at the time. If you have an item and could send a photo we would be interested in seeing it.
Regards,
Nick & Ali
I have a bonbon dish by the same maker .
DeleteHey, about the date letters. In the place of a letter C i've noticed a gothic letter A on what looks like a coffeepot. Would this make it older than the plate?
ReplyDeleteHi Tommy. Yes as standard silver hallmark the earlier the letter in the alphabet then the older the item is. However I havent been able to find out if these unofficial date letters on the J.S.& S items follow a sequence so i could only assume that the A would be older than the C. I would be interested to see photos of your item and the marks on it so i can follow up my research on this matter. Can you post some photos on here?
ReplyDeleteNick.
Hey Nick and Ali,
ReplyDeleteI have a footed tray that is 15 inches wide and quite fancy by this maker, J. S. & S.
I picked it up at an estate auction here in the states near Raleigh, NC. a few weeks ago.
It's late in the evening here right now but I intend to take some photos of mine and send to you tomorrow.
Regards, Dale & Joycee
Hi Dale & Joyce thanks for the post. Your tray sounds very interesting and we look forward to seeing the photos.
DeleteRegards, Nick & Ali
Hi Dale & Joycee did you manage to take photos of your tray? We are very keen to see the piece and share with you whatever information we can gather.
DeleteRegards
Nick & Ali
Hi Nick & Ali,
ReplyDeleteI also have a footed salver with the J.S & S, beaver, crown and a letter I cannot make out. On each of the feet it has a diamond mark with a series of letters and numbers which I have decoded as:
I = Metal
G = 1863
B = October
19 = date
5 = Batch number
and in the middle a Rd mark which I assume means registered.?
I would like to post some photo's so maybe you guys can help with dating the piece as the diamond mark may have been done before the actual manufacture of the piece. And whether this is Silver or Plated?
Thanks Nathan
Hi Nathan please do post photos and we will do our best to identify it for you.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Nick & Ali
As an update on the original post the tray was sold to a Mr John Sherwood here in the UK. John is a direct decendant of the first John Sherwood who started the company and is compiling a data base of the products produced by J.S.&S over the years it was in operation. Anyone with items by J.S.&S. please feel free to post photos on here and with your permission we will pass them on to John.

Hi, I have a pincushion that looks as though it may have been worn on a chain. It's a butterfly and was bought as a gift for me a number of years ago. Would you know any further information on it? It has JS & S followed by an anchor, a lion, and an X.
ReplyDeleteWE have recently discovered a Victorian silver fruit bowl with the marks as follows in this order left to right: Initials JS&S in a shield; Beaver in a rectangle; Crown in a square; Gothic blackletter Initial 'B'. Perhaps yopu could tell us what age it would be and whether it might be valuable ? How do we send photographs ?
ReplyDeleteHello! Glad I found this page. I received a footed bowl from my great grand mother. She was welsh. Markings on the bottom are JS&s ,a beaver(I thought was an anteater at first), EPNS, 762. Also, there's a crossed scratch on the bottom. Just one though underneath the 7. What do all these mean? Please help
ReplyDeleteThank you, kate
Hi, I have just received a silver cake basket from my Aunt, we think it was one of my grandmothers wedding presents. It has the marks J.S&S, beaver, crown & gothic letter B. Any updated information on the 'date' lettering?
ReplyDeleteAlso faintly etched on the base is the following: B2412C, rr/2, 77/y, rw/i any ideas on their meaning? I will try to send some photos but don't think the etch marks will show that well. Thanks, Alan
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI have seen a lovely silver plated "tray" with six glasses which I am tempted to purchase. Stamp says JS & S in a shield, then the beaver, then EPNS, then Upper Case A (in normal script, not gothic). The A is in a circular/oval stamp, not square/rectangular loke other examples of JS & S. Underneath, it says 259. I don't know if the glasses are original or just vintage substitutes as I don't know much about dating glasses. Have you seen other examples of the A being non-gothic and non-rectangular? I am in Australia. Thanks.
This is me again (puppy - about the oval "A" - I forgot to hit "notify me" so if you could reply to this post instead, I will be notified if you answer :)
DeleteIve got a small spoon with letter B then a beaver and what looks like a bird spreading its wings, or a cross then J S & S in a sheild any ideas
ReplyDeleteHello All.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that John Sherwood the Elder of King's Heath in Birmingham also started silver Plating as John Sherwood and son in 1810. John Died in 1854. John set up his son John in the silverplate manufacturing way earlier than 1858. John Jr. worked with his father John and Uncle Richard Sherwood. J R and J Jun. Silverplate manufacturers on Lichfield Street. John Junior's sons William and George were the owners of John Sherwood and Sons 1858 Ltd. Perhaps the A and C letters were from products made by father and son back as early as 1830.
John the elders son Jacob was also a silver plater as was Richard's son James.
We have a large ladle with JS/&S on a shield and crown, "beaver", and A. I can't tell whether it is plated or solid silver.
ReplyDeleteI have a woven basket which has a JS&S hallmark with beaver, crown and seems like a second crown with the number 9316 on the base do you have any info on it please.
